The song was written by Clannad members, brothers Pól and Ciarán Brennan. It was released as the third single from Clannad’s 1985 album “Macalla”. The single was released in January 1986 peaking at number 5 in Ireland and at #17 in the UK singles chart. In 1989, “In A lifetime” was re-released to promote the compilation “Pastpresent”.
