“Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money)” is a song by the British synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, from their debut album, “Please.” Written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money)” reflects the duo’s early fascination with the socio-economic landscape of the 1980s. The song was originally released in 1985 but failed to chart. However, it was re-released in My 1986following the success of “West End Girls,” and this time it became a hit.

The lyrics of “Opportunities” are a satirical take on the Thatcher-era focus on wealth and ambition. The song features two characters: one with the brains and one with the looks, who scheme to get rich. Tennant’s delivery of lines like “I’ve got the brains, you’ve got the looks / Let’s make lots of money” is both ironic and critical, highlighting the superficial and often ruthless pursuit of wealth.

Musically, “Opportunities” is driven by a pulsating electronic beat, characteristic of the synth-pop genre. The production features a mix of synthesizers, drum machines, and electronic effects, creating a dynamic and energetic sound. The song’s catchy chorus and upbeat tempo mask the darker undertones of its lyrics, creating an intriguing juxtaposition.

The music video for the first single release was directed by Eric Watson and Andy Morahan. A Cadillac stands in an underground parking garage, the headlights switching on by themselves as Lowe walks away from it.

The music video for the re-released of “Opportunities,” was directed by Polish filmmaker Zbigniew Rybczyński.

Upon its re-release in 1986 (produced by Stephen Hague), “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money)” achieved commercial success. It peaked at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart and reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. The song’s success helped to solidify the Pet Shop Boys’ presence in the music industry following the breakthrough of “West End Girls.”
