The song was written by Martin Lee Gore. “The Meaning of Love” was released as the second single from the band’s second studio album “A Broken Frame”. The single was released in April 1982 with “Oberkorn (It’s a Small Town)” on the B-side. It peaked at #12 on the UK Official Singles Chart.

American singer and songwriter Aretha Franklin was born. In 1987, her duet with George Michael, "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" topped the singles charts in the UK and US.  Aretha Franklin died of cancer on August 16, 2018 in Detroit at the age of 76.


 
1947 Elton John

Sir Elton John (Reginald Kenneth Dwight) was born. He had seven numbers ones in the UK and nine in the US.  His tribute single "Candle in the Wind 1997" sold over 33 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling single in the history of the UK and US singles charts.
