American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Rick James (born James Ambrose Johnson Jr.) was born. In 1981, he topped Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in the U.S. with "Super Freak". Rick James was found dead in his Los Angeles home at the Oakwood Toluca on August 6, 2004.
