Released on October 3, 1985, Gambler is one of Madonna’s lesser-known singles, but it’s a hidden highlight from her early years. Written entirely by Madonna herself, the track appeared on the Vision Quest movie soundtrack, alongside her chart-topping ballad Crazy for You. But unlike that hit, Gambler was never released as a single in the U.S.—Sire Records held it back to keep the spotlight on her Like a Virgin album.

Fast, Fierce, and Fearless

Produced by John “Jellybean” Benitez, Gambler is a high-octane synth-pop and post-disco jam. Packed with handclaps, synth bass, and punchy percussion, it’s pure mid-’80s energy. The lyrics channel Madonna’s trademark independence and confidence—”I’m a gambler, and I will take you by surprise” sums up her fearless drive. With its fast tempo and bold vocals, the track stands out as one of her most underrated bangers.

Charting Success Without a U.S. Push

Even without a U.S. single release, Gambler found an audience overseas. It climbed into the Top 10 in Australia, Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, and the UK. Instead of a dedicated music video, the promotional clip used footage from Vision Quest, where Madonna performs the song on stage during a club scene.

A Fan-Favorite Rarity Returns

Madonna only ever performed Gambler live once—during The Virgin Tour in 1985—which made it even more elusive over the years. For a long time, it was also missing from streaming services, but that changed in 2022 when the track was officially released digitally, allowing fans old and new to rediscover it.

Though it didn’t reach the same heights as her other ‘80s singles, Gambler is a great reminder of Madonna’s early songwriting chops and her flair for crafting catchy, empowering pop with a defiant edge.
