The Communards – Disenchanted
A sharp message wrapped in synths and falsetto fire

Released in May 1986, “Disenchanted” was the second single from The Communards’ debut album Communards—a track that might sound like a celebration on the surface but dives deep into themes of frustration, alienation, and protest. Written by Jimmy Somerville and Richard Coles and produced by Mike Thorne, it’s a showcase of how smart, political pop could still fill a dancefloor.

The song delivers bright Hi-NRG synth-pop with punchy piano lines and pulsing beats, but the lyrics hit harder: it’s a lament for broken systems and disappointed youth, calling out prejudice and pushing toward hope. That tension—between upbeat sound and serious message—is exactly what made The Communards so compelling.

Video in a café, message in the details

The official video doesn’t go for flash or choreography—instead, it features Somerville moving through a café scene that feels grounded and intimate. He sits alone at a table, surrounded by regular people, and gradually walks through the space, singing with restrained intensity. There’s no theatrical performance—just quiet isolation and observation, which fits perfectly with the song’s theme of social disconnection.

It’s more about mood than spectacle, showing how even a public place can feel isolating when things aren’t right.

Chart performance and staying power

“Disenchanted” reached #29 on the UK Singles Chart, spending five weeks there. It also climbed to #20 in Ireland, #47 in the Netherlands, and #43 on Billboard’s US Dance/Maxi-Singles Sales chart. While it wasn’t a huge commercial hit, it proved that The Communards could follow up their breakout success with something bold and meaningful.

The track remains a fan favorite and was included in later reissues and deluxe editions, including the 35th Anniversary Edition of the album released in 2021. It’s part of a legacy where protest didn’t mean sacrificing musical joy.
