“Wishing on a Star” by Fresh Four is a cover of the original song by Rose Royce, released in September 1989 with “Smoke Filled Thoughts” on the B-side. Fresh Four (Children of the Ghetto), a British DJ and production group from Bristol, consisting of Paul Southey (Suv), brothers J. Thompson (Flynn (5)) and Kirk Thompson (Krust) and Judge, reimagined the classic 1978 ballad as a trip-hop track with a distinct Bristol sound, blending elements of reggae, dub, and house music.

Fresh Four - Wishing On A Star

Fresh Four’s version of “Wishing on a Star” slowed down the tempo, giving the song a laid-back, atmospheric vibe. The track features deep basslines, dreamy synthesizers, and a smooth, relaxed rhythm, typical of the early UK trip-hop scene. The vocals, provided by Lizz E, are soulful and emotional, staying true to the original while giving it a more modern and chilled feel.

The song retains the original lyrics, which express longing and hope for love. The narrator reflects on a lost relationship and wishes for a second chance, “wishing on a star” in the hopes of rekindling the connection. The emotional depth of the lyrics is complemented by the mellow, introspective arrangement in Fresh Four’s version.

Fresh Four’s cover of “Wishing on a Star” reached No. 10 on the UK Singles Chart in December 1989, giving the group their most prominent hit.
